Beating Spurs to James Maddison would be huge coup for West Ham after Moyes scouting mission

West Ham United have reportedly joined the race to sign Norwich City ace James Maddison.

West Ham United are in the market for new signings this month, and they appear to be keen on challenging Tottenham Hotspur for a major signing.

The Hammers are in fine form having won four of their last eight Premier League games after thrashing Huddersfield Town 4-1 last weekend, but manager David Moyes is hunting for new additions.

Whilst a central midfielder appears to be his priority, it now seems that Moyes is eyeing another playmaker too, with the Daily Mail reporting that he was at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night to watch James Maddison in action for Norwich City against Chelsea.

Maddison, 21, has starred for Norwich this season, notching seven goals and five assists in 25 Championship games to spark mass Premier League interest in his signature.

The London Evening Standard claim that Leicester City, Liverpool, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur are all eyeing Maddison, with Spurs looking at a £20million deal this month before loaning Maddison back to Norwich until the end of the season.

Now, West Ham appear to be rivalling Spurs for Maddison’s signature, and winning the race for his signature would be a huge coup for Moyes and co.

Maddison is one of the most in-demand English talents around, and West Ham managing to fend off strong competition and persuade him to move to the London Stadium would show off the pulling power the Hammers still have despite some struggles over the last 18 months.

After focusing on players 28 or older – such as Jose Fonte, Robert Snodgrass, Joe Hart and Javier Hernandez – in 2017, it’s now time for West Ham to focus on talented players both for now and the future, and offering Maddison a starring role for the coming years could help them beat Spurs to his signature.

It may take such a promise to give West Ham a legitimate chance of signing Maddison, but if they can pull off a deal, Moyes and co will feel that they have pulled off a legitimate coup with the English playmaker.
