Liverpool and Newcastle United have both been linked with Red Bull Salzburg’s Valon Berisha.

Salzburg's Valon Berisha celebrates after scoring during the Europa League Round of 16 first leg football match between Borussia Dortmund and FC Salzburg on March 8, 2018 in Dortmund.

Red Bull Salzburg will again look to pull off an incredible Europa League comeback on Thursday night, as they trail Marseille 2-0 in the first leg of their semi-final clash.

Having completed a stunning fightback to knock out Lazio in the quarter-finals, Marco Rose’s side now have to do it all again, and playmaker Valon Berisha is bound to be crucial.

The 25-year-old playmaker has hit five goals in 12 Europa League games this season, with his tally in all competitions standing at 13 goals and 11 assists in what has been a stunning campaign.

Berisha, a Kosovo international who has made his name in Sweden and Austria and also represented Norway, could be playing one of his final games for Red Bull Salzburg given interest from Premier League clubs.

Valon Berisha of Salzburg looks on during the UEFA Champions League Play-offs First leg match between Dinamo Zagreb and Salzburg at Stadion Maksimir on August 16, 2016 in Zagreb, Croatia.

Spox recently reported that Liverpool have opened talks over a deal for Berisha as Jurgen Klopp looks to strengthen his squad, whilst The Chronicle report that Newcastle United have been tracking the playmaker for 18 months.

Many may feel that Newcastle have missed their chance to sign Berisha, but with a host of attacking midfielders already at Anfield, Berisha would surely only feature as a squad player at Liverpool and not in the starring role he has enjoyed in Salzburg.

Newcastle could offer a key role as a No. 10 in Rafael Benitez’s 4-2-3-1 system, being the creative link player that Ayoze Perez has sometimes struggled to become at St. James’ Park.

Benitez would need the financial backing to pull off a deal, but if Newcastle can pip Liverpool to Berisha’s signature by offering him a key role, it would be an ideal statement to kick off the Magpies’ summer transfer business.
