Southampton fans on Twitter have been raving over Oriol Romeu’s performance against Newcastle United on Friday evening.
The Spaniard was a key component in the Saints’ 2-0 win over the Magpies and supporters were quick to sound their appreciation for him.
You can understand why the fans were so vocal about him in particular, he played an absolute blinder at St Mary’s.
The former Chelsea man played three key passes while also making six tackles, and while he was booked for a foul, that didn’t overshadow what was an utterly brilliant showing.
Romeu almost capped off his performance with a fantastic goal too, striking the crossbar with a ferocious strike from 25 yards.
It’s no surprise that the Saints moved to the top of the league on Friday when they have players putting in those types of performances.
There were certainly doubts about Ralph Hasenhuttl’s options in midfield after the sale of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg to Tottenham in the summer, but Romeu is certainly stepping up, with one fan even saying that he’s better than Hojbjerg in every department.
It may have only been in a routine home win against Newcastle, but if Romeu can perform like that every week, Hojbjerg will quickly be forgotten by the St Mary’s faithful.
Whether or not the Spaniard can keep this form up remains to be seen, but with 16 points from eight games so far this season, the Saints can dream of a European place this season.
