To say that Billy Reid is a fan of Celtic new boy Shane Duffy is an understatement.
This week, the Hoops signed the Brighton centre-back on a season-long loan as Neil Lennon’s side chase 10 Premiership titles in a row.
Duffy brings 96 Premier League appearances with him to Celtic – and 34 caps for the Republic of Ireland – and his experience and nous should be a big asset for the Scottish giants this season.
In fact, Reid, assistant manager at Brighton, has tipped the 6’4 powerhouse to cause ‘mayhem’ in the Scottish Premiership.
Glasgow-born Reid said to The Scottish Mail on Sunday [06/09], page 62 and 63: “He is different class. Celtic have got an absolute winner. He is a beast in both boxes, and he’ll cause mayhem up in Scotland. He’s a monster of a centre back and I genuinely expect him to overpower people up in Scotland.
“He attacks the ball really well in both boxes and can head it for miles. He could be a colossus for Celtic this season. Listen, Duffy is a Premier League player.”
Lennon showered praise on Head of Recruitment Nick Hammond for getting this deal done a little earlier in the week [official site].
Despite Reid’s praise, Duffy might not even be a regular starter for the Bhoys.
Christopher Jullien and Kristoffer Ajer were immense for Lennon’s side last term and despite some difficulties so far this season, those two are likely to be the first-choice pairing in central defence, if the Irish manager sticks with a back four.
That being said, rotation will be key for Celtic this season – especially if they get into the Europa League – and there’s no danger in Duffy not playing regularly.
