Rangers are showing no signs of slowing down, and it seems that Steven Gerrard’s side will win the Scottish Premiership title ahead of Neil Lennon’s Celtic.
The Gers won again on Saturday and are now as many as 23 points clear of second-placed and bitter Old Firm rivals Celtic at the top of the league table.
True, the Hoops have three games in hand, but with Rangers having yet to lose a match in the league this season, it is really hard to see the Ibrox club not win the title.
Celtic legend David Provan is of the opinion that Rangers will win the title, but he believes that there is a big factor that could affect the Gers.
Provan wrote in The Scottish Sun: “With Celtic out of the title race now, the only danger for Gerrard is the virus and the Scottish Government.
“Given the relationship between Hampden and Holyrood, politicians wouldn’t need any encouragement to shut the game down again. You can bet that scenario has crossed Gerrard’s mind.
“With the new strain running riot, Ibrox alarm bells will have sounded when both Lennon and Derek McInnes questioned Covid protocols at Premiership grounds. Not sure they should have flagged that up to Holyrood when they could have marked Hampden’s card privately.
“Be in no doubt, if the outbreak at Raith Rovers becomes typical, the game is in bother. And if Gerrard was spot on claiming the fixture list must be completed, it won’t be his call. It beggars belief this Premiership campaign started with no provision for another aborted season.”
Should Rangers be worried?
Of course, there is uncertainly, not just in football but in life in general, regarding the global health crisis, but Rangers need not worry too much.
When the 2019-20 Scottish Premiership campaign was curtailed in May 2020, the final league table was determined on a points-per-game basis.
Perhaps something similar will be done this time around if the season has to be curtailed.
Given how far ahead Rangers are of Celtic in the league table, they would win the title on points per game with ease.
