Steven Thompson and Michael Stewart have told BBC Sportscene that they do not believe Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers will be tempted by a move down to the English Championship with Aston Villa.

The Guardian has claimed that Villa have included the former Liverpool and Swansea City boss on a shortlist to replace Steve Bruce, along with the likes of Thierry Henry, Dean Smith and Rui Faria.

Rodgers, 45, has been excellent since joining Celtic in the summer of 2016, winning back-to-back trebles but a tumultuous summer saw some pundits and fans considering his future at the club.

Asked whether they believe Rodgers could be tempted by Villa, both Thompson and Stewart agreed that a move to England’s second tier was unlikely to tempt Rodgers to leave Celtic Park via the exit door.

Thompson: “I’d say his comments mean he has ruled it out. I’m not so sure it is a job that he would consider anyway. Aston Villa are a massive club, but right now they’re toiling in the English Championship. I don’t think that is where Brendan Rodgers will want to see himself managing after Celtic.”

Stewart added: “I’d be astonished if he was to leave Celtic for the English Championship, absolutely astonished. I don’t think that’s a goer.”

Rodgers has a contract at Celtic until the summer of 2021, which could see him complete 10 successive Scottish Premiership titles at Parkhead if he wins every league title until that date.

It remains to be seen if indeed Rodgers will be either approached, or tempted, by Villa, as the Midlands side look for a new manager to guide them from the bottom half of the Championship and back into Premier League promotion reckoning.
