Mark Lawrenson has stated on BBC Sport how he expects Everton to play against Liverpool in the Merseyside derby this weekend.

Everton will take on Liverpool at Goodison Park in the Premier League on Sunday evening.

The Reds will head into the game as favourites, and will know that maximum points from the encounter will see them get closer to the league title.

Liverpool legend Lawrenson has backed the Reds to win the Merseyside derby, and he has a theory how Everton will play against Jurgen Klopp’s side.

While predicting a 1-0 win for Liverpool, Lawrenson told BBC Sport: “I am expecting Liverpool to be the team trying to set the pace but it is optimistic to expect the kind of performance that has put them so far clear at the top of the table.

“As good as the Reds’ front three are, they are only brilliant when they are really sharp and I don’t think they will be.

“I would not be surprised if Everton are cautious, play three at the back and sit in a little bit – they don’t want to get torn apart – so because of all that I can see it being a close game.

“But the way Liverpool’s season has gone so far, I am still going to go with them to find a way of winning. We already know they are capable of doing that when they are not at their best.”

Tricky fixture

Liverpool will head into the Merseyside derby as favourites, but it could be a tricky fixture.

After all, the Reds have not played for three months, and there is also the fact that there will be no fans at Goodison Park.

Based on just quality and talent, Liverpool should pick up all three points from the encounter, but Everton manager Carlo Ancelotti is a master at big games.

The Italian tactician will know that a win against the Reds will enhance their chances of finishing in the Europa League places, and it will also encourage the fans for what’s to come under him next season and beyond.
