Ian Wright and Jermaine Jenas were not impressed by the struggle between the two Tottenham stars.
BBC pundits Ian Wright and Jermaine Jenas said on Sunday’s Match of the Day 2 show that they were unimpressed by the argument between Tottenham Hotspur pair Heung-min Son and Erik Lamela over who should take a penalty, as quoted by the Daily Mail.
Spurs were already 2-0 up against Manchester City when they were awarded a penalty for a foul on Dele Alli and the chance to put the result beyond doubt.
Son had the ball and was walking to the spot when he was stopped by teammate Lamela, who ultimately wrestled control from the South Korean only to see his spot-kick saved.
Spurs were not punished for that miss, but speaking to Match of the Day 2 after the game, former Arsenal striker Wright admitted that he felt uncomfortable watching the disagreement.
Wright said, as quoted by the Mail: “I really find it uncomfortable. I don’t know if Lamela was told to take the penalty but Son’s on form.
“He’s the one scoring goals at the minute, he wants it but Lamela has obviously taken control. I don’t know if he’s the senior guy? It’s a poor penalty as well. He was a lot off it today.”
Former Spurs midfielder Jenas then added: “Danny Rose went over to try and sort it out. What you don’t want is it to be embarrassing. Danny did the right thing.
“What you’ve got to say to Son is ‘he’s got the ball, you don’t want to be squabbling in front of all these people – just let him take it.”
Mauricio Pochettino has insisted that he is not concerned by the argument, but it is a discouraging sign to see two such high-profile stars involved in such an incident in front of their home supporters.
Spurs ultimately won the game, however, to extend their unbeaten start to the Premier League season to seven games.
