Danny Murphy has told The Daily Mail that Liverpool need a new striker this summer and suggested that they ‘break the bank’ to bring Erling Haaland to Anfield.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are enduring some of their worst domestic form of all time right now.
Liverpool are eighth in the Premier League table but have lost their last six games at Anfield for the first time in their history.
Everybody and their dog knows about the challenges Klopp has faced regarding the centre-back options, but Sadio Mane, Mo Salah and Roberto Firmino have been fit for the vast majority of the campaign and yet they’re struggling to fire the Reds to domestic victories.
Their problems run a little deeper than absences to Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez – and former Liverpool midfielder Murphy wants to see a big-money move for the Borussia Dortmund sensation sanctioned once the transfer window opens.
He said: “Mo Salah, Sadio Mane, Firmino and Jota are a fantastic quartet but Liverpool need a top-line No 9 to become a goal machine again. If Erling Haaland is available, why not be ambitious and try to break the bank for him? His arrival wouldn’t make Firmino redundant, just give Liverpool more options.”
Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth said earlier this month that the 20-year-old – who has 31 goals in 30 games this season – would be interested in a move to Merseyside, should Klopp come knocking.
But that’s only half the battle. The other half is whether Liverpool could or would pay upwards of £150 million to sign the towering Norwegian and that, if we’re honest, is doubtful.
