Don Hutchison has urged Liverpool to push for Dayot Upamecano’s signature and shared that his ‘£40 million buy-out clause’ is ‘not a huge amount of money’, as he told ESPN.

The BBC pundit also shared that buying an ‘A-list centre-half’ of his calibre would also add ‘that quality’ to Liverpool’s backline when Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez return from injury.

It has been a torrid time for the champions of England off the field, with injuries to various first-team players and a number of them also having to self-isolate, with the latest being Mo Salah.

Former Liverpool midfielder Hutchison shared his thoughts on who Jurgen Klopp should purchase when the window re-opens up in the New Year and Upamecano was a name he threw straight into the ring.

“I think, correct me if I am wrong, but I think Upamecano’s buy-out clause at Leipzig is £40 million,” said Hutchison. “So, that’s not [worth] a huge amount of money for such a young talent.

“Koulibaly is still at Napoli, who is valued at about £60 million. I think what it does it really pushes Liverpool into the transfer market to go and buy an A-list centre-half.

“So, when Joe Gomez is back and Virgil van Dijk is back then they still have that quality and then the squad from there will only be stronger.”

Liverpool’s trophies under Jurgen Klopp

  1. Champions League

    2018/19

  2. UEFA Super Cup

    2019

  3. FIFA Club World Cup

    2019

  4. Premier League

    2019/20

It has been a pretty unforgettable six weeks or so for those on Merseyside and they will be hoping this is the end of their bad luck.

But what becomes interesting now is how the usually strong and productive Liverpool board deal with the January transfer window and trying to acquire that centre-half.

Those on the outside will be well aware that the Reds will be desperate to bring in a defender, and given that it’s Liverpool, at least an extra £10 million will be added on the player(s) they target.
