The former Leeds striker, who now works as a pundit for BBC Radio Leeds, was impressed with the display produced by Costa during the Whites’ 4-3 win against Fulham at Elland Road in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
Whelan believes that the 26-year-old former Wolverhampton Wanderers winger has stepped up to the Premier League.
Whelan said about Helder Costa on BBC Radio Leeds (5:15pm, September 19, 2020): “He has had that season now where he knows what it’s all about. He knows how to fit in, but I do think we are set up to be a Premier League side, the way we play, the way we go at teams.
“We are that sort of Premier League side. We have got off to a really good start, don’t get me wrong, but Costa for me is the one person in my opinion that has really stepped up to this level.”
Important player for Leeds United
Costa scored twice for Leeds in their win against Fulham to build on his encouraging performance against Liverpool last weekend.
The winger is a very good winger who seems to have stepped up his game this season following the Whites’ automatic promotion from the Championship.
The Portugal international scored four goals and provided four assists in 43 Championship matches last season, according to WhoScored.
If Leeds are to be successful in the Premier League this season and challenge for a top-10 finish, then Costa will have to be on top of his game.
So far, the Whites have looked very good and seem to be holding their own in the Premier League.
