Sunderland defeated Norwich City 3-0 at Carrow Road.
Former England international Terry Butcher praised Sunderland’s efficiency in-front of goal as they claimed all three points with a 3-0 win over relegation rivals Norwich City, the BBC reports.
With four points separating the two teams ahead of kick-off, the Black Cats travelled to Carrow Road knowing they simply had to win as they bid to preserve their Premier League status.
The game ebbed and flowed during the first-half, yet Fabio Borini broke the deadlock via the penalty spot and further goals from Jermain Defoe and Duncan Watmore sealed a precious win for the visitors.
Co-commentating on BBC Radio Five Live, Butcher praised Sunderland’s effectiveness in-front of goal and singled out Lee Cattemole as a star performer for Sam Allardyce’s side.
“It wasn’t the most complete performance. Sunderland had opportunities and took them, they looked stronger as the game went on. This is the sort of game that is made for Lee Cattermole in the middle of the park. His never-say-die attitude is first class,” Butcher explained.
“It is a nervous time in Norfolk, they have got to dwell on this for two weeks,”
Sunderland’s victory moves them to within just one point of Norwich, having played a game fewer.
Survival is back in their own hands, yet they must now turn the Stadium of Light in to a fortress and pick up the necessary points at home as they play three of their remaining five matches on Wearside.
The Canaries had their chances against Sunderland, taking 19 shots in total but their lack of prolificacy was their downfall and they were caught far too often on the counter when pushing men forward.
