BBC pundit takes swipe at Arsenal fans using £60,000-a-week Manchester United player

Garth Crooks has praised Manchester United defender Jonny Evans for his performance this past weekend, and while doing so, he has mocked Arsenal fans.

Both Arsenal and Manchester United were in action in the Premier League this past weekend.

Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal played out a 2-2 draw with Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates Stadium in the North London derby on Sunday.

On Saturday, Manchester United got the better of Burnley 1-0 away from home at Turf Moor.

Jonny Evans started the match for the Red Devils.

Evans is 35 now.

The Northern Ireland international defender produced a very good performance.

Former Tottenham Hotspur forward Garth Crooks was impressed by the display produced by Evans.

Crooks has included the 35-year-old in his Premier League Team of the Week.

While praising the £60,000-a-week (Spotrac) defender, the BBC Sport pundit has taken a swipe at Arsenal fans.

Crooks has said that Arsenal have not had a top-class centre-back for a while.

The pundit wrote on BBC Sport: “I overheard a conversation recently where an Arsenal supporter said how surprised he was to see Evans come on against his team a few weeks ago and I must say so was I. 

“However, he went on to suggest that Evans was, at the tender age of 35, no longer good enough for Manchester United.

“Well the point of view couldn’t have been further from the truth. Evans was the star performer against Burnley.

“The Northern Ireland international had a headed goal disallowed, played the most exquisite pass to Bruno Fernandes to volley home and helped United keep a clean sheet.

“I’m not entirely sure what Arsenal fans know about top-class centre-backs anyway.

“The last ones they had were Tony Adams, Steve Bould and Sol Campbell and they all played into their thirties.”

Arsenal and Manchester United objectives this season

Arsenal are fifth in the Premier League table at the moment with 14 points from six matches.

The Gunners are four points behind leaders and defending champions Manchester City.

Meanwhile, United currently find themselves ninth in the Premier League table with nine points from six games.

While Arsenal are aiming to win the Premier League title this season, United’s main objective this campaign now seems to be to finish in the top four.
