Tam McManus has admitted that he was surprised to see Celtic release Jonny Hayes.

The Republic of Ireland international left Parkhead last week after three years in Glasgow.

Hayes, a £1.3 million signing by Brendan Rodgers in 2017, was out of contract at Celtic and it was previously reported that Neil Lennon would offer him an extension.

The 32-year-old had been an important utility player for Lennon over the past 18 months and has played in some very big wins, such as victories away to Rangers and Lazio this past season.

And McManus feels that the Scottish Premiership champions should’ve kept him on for another year.

Despite being popular among Celtic fans, the truth is that Hayes was effectively a squad player.

Yes, he was Mr Reliable, but the club clearly plan on signing better players when the transfer window opens, otherwise they could and probably would have kept the former Aberdeen winger – who had impressed in a wing-back role – on.
