Chris Sutton suggested on 606 on BBC Radio 5 Live that Rhian Brewster ‘hasn’t lived up to expectation’ after leaving Liverpool in the summer.
Looking back at it now, Liverpool’s transfer guru, Michael Edwards, did a remarkable job in getting Sheffield United to pay £23.5 million (BBC Sport) for Brewster’s services.
Since swapping Anfield for Bramall Lane, the 20-year-old hasn’t managed to score a goal for the Blades.
Now, with Chris Wilder departing the bottom-of-the-table Premier League club, it has raised the question of where it all went wrong?
And ex-Blackburn striker Sutton suggested that, from the owner’s perspective, they will be looking at the money spent on players.
“Just playing devil’s advocate,” said Sutton. “Will the owners look at the signings of McBurnie and Brewster,” said Sutton.
“And maybe say, they cost a lot of money and they haven’t lived up to expectation.”
When Brewster was at Swansea in the Championship, he was doing bits for the Welsh club and it seemed right for him to make a step-up to a Premier League side.
But he clearly needed another season in England’s second-tier after spending six-months on-loan at the Liberty Stadium.
The most important thing for Brewster is that he can still turn this around and he has years ahead of him.
It just might be the case that picking up his career away from Sheffield United might be the best option.
