The former Arsenal central defender, who now works as a pundit for BBC Sport, made the comments during the Gunners’ North London derby against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.
The Gunners lost the Premier League game 2-1 at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and were defensively disappointing.
However, Martinez was a bright spark, as the 27-year-old Argentine goalkeeper made a brilliant save from a Ben Davies attempt in the first half and also denied Son Heung-min.
Upson was following the match for BBC Sport, and while he believes that Arsenal head coach Arteta might think of leaving Martinez out of the team when first-choice goalkeeper Leno is back in action, he does not think that the Argentine should be dropped.
Upson said on BBC Sport: “Mikel Arteta must be looking at this and thinking when Bernd Leno is fit I am going to have to drop Emiliano Martinez. And he has probably done well enough not to be dropped.”
Bernd Leno straight back in?
Leno is the undisputed first-choice goalkeeper at Arsenal, and he should be back fit by the end of next month, as suggested by The Sun.
While Martinez is doing well at the moment, Leno is likely to go straight back into the starting lineup for the start of next season.
