Pundit Garth Crooks has told BBC Sport that he thinks the partnership between Jermain Defoe and Victor Anichebe could ‘transform’ Sunderland’s season.

The Black Cats picked up their first win of the season before the international break with a 2-1 victory over Bournemouth, an they followed up that up with win number two on Saturday afternoon.

Sunderland hammered fellow strugglers Hull City 3-0 at the Stadium of Light, as Jermain Defoe’s opener gave them the lead, before Victor Anichebe grabbed two second half goals to seal the win.

The win takes Sunderland off the bottom of the table, and they’re now just three points away from safety as David Moyes attempts to finally get some momentum going.

Many believe that the last two results came because Moyes gave Defoe some support in attack, with Anichebe given the nod to start in both games.

The Nigerian powerhouse, 28, worked wth Moyes at Everton, and the pair reunited when Anichebe penned a deal with Sunderland as a free agent back in September, having left West Brom at the end of his contract over the summer.

With three goals in two starts, Anichebe has made a huge impact at Sunderland, and pundit Garth Crooks has now offered his praise to both Anichebe and Defoe, as seen on BBC Sport.

Crooks suggested that Defoe and Anichebe and transform Sunderland’s season if given the chance, as manager Moyes has often been too cautious to go with two strikers, and thinks that the Scot should be brave enough to keep playing both of them together.

“Defoe and Anichebe! This could transform Sunderland’s season, if the manager is bold enough and brave enough to play them both together,” said Crooks. “In his career David Moyes has been too cautious and negative for his own good,” he added.
