Pundit Steven Thompson has told BBC Sport Scotland’s Facebook page that he thinks Derek McInnes is the perfect man to take over as Rangers manager.

Last Friday, Rangers announced that Mark Warburton had resigned from his post as manager, with assistant boss David Weir and recruitment chief Frank McParland also leaving the club.

Graeme Murty has been handed the job on an interim basis, overseeing the club’s 2-1 Scottish Cup win over Morton last weekend, and he’ll be in charge for Sunday’s trip to Dundee as well.

Many Rangers fans are now wondering just who will be appointed on a longer-term basis, with a host names linked, many of whom have a strong connection to Rangers.

Former players Frank de Boer and Billy Davies have been suggested for the job, as has ex-Rangers boss Alex McLeish, with many feeling that Warburton didn’t quite understand the club like somebody with ties to the club would.

Now, former Gers striker and current pundit Steven Thompson has offered his view on Rangers’ search for a new manager, naming who he wants to take the job.

Thompson, who hit 23 goals in 85 games for Rangers, has told the BBC Sport Scotland Facebook page that he thinks Derek McInnes is the ‘perfect man’ and the ‘ideal candidate’ for the job at Ibrox.

McInnes, 45, made over 50 appearances for Rangers during his playing days as a midfielder, and has impressed as a manager with Aberdeen, winning almost 57% of his games in charge of the club.

Thompson believes that, whilst Rangers would have to pay considerable compensation for McInnes, chairman Dave King should splash the cash and bring McInnes back to Ibrox due to his knowledge of Scottish football.

“I personally – and Aberdeen fans won’t enjoy this – I personally think that Derek McInnes is the perfect man for the job,” said Thompson. “He knows the Scottish game inside out. Dave King has ‘got money’ so they could do that, and whether that happens now or at the end of the season, I just feel that Derek would be the ideal candidate,” he added.
