Everton began the Frank Lampard era at Goodison Park in ruthless fashion this evening.
Lampard oversaw a 4-1 victory over Brentford on Merseyside to kick off his reign in style.
That his first outing was against a Premier League outfit, and to win so comfortably, represents a lot of optimism for Everton.
Yerry Mina opened the scoring for the Toffees, before three second-half goals from Richarlison, Mason Holgate and Andros Townsend secured an emphatic victory for the 43-year-old Chelsea icon.
Ashley Williams, who spent three seasons at Everton, told BBC’s Final Score this afternoon about what his past teammates have told him about Lampard’s early training sessions.
He said: “I think it’s a good fit. Speaking to the lads this week they’re happy enough. They’ve enjoyed the training. The fans in general are happy with the appointment. He knows football. He’s got experience and for once Everton is looking optimistic.”
This was a brilliant way for the former England international to begin his career at Goodison Park.
But early victories for managers are par for the course.
There’s an initial honeymoon period and he even had one at Chelsea and everyone knows how that ended up.
Lampard himself will know that early results like this mean nothing over the course of his Everton career but, to be positive, this is certainly an excellent start after such a difficult season under Rafael Benitez.
