Mark Lawrenson has told BBC Sport that David Moyes admitted to him that Aston Villa were better than his side on Monday evening in a private conversation.

West Ham beat Villa 2-1 on their last outing, but it is fair to say that the Hammers rode their luck at times.

Villa were guilty of missing some huge chances in the contest, as poor finishing let them down.

West Ham, on the other hand, were ruthless in front of goal as they claimed the three points.

But Moyes knows that his side weren’t actually at their best in their last outing, despite the result.

“West Ham are on a great run and are looking for their fourth straight win,” Lawrenson said, ahead of the London side’s game against Manchester United.

“I spoke to their manager, and my friend, David Moyes last week who told me Aston Villa were the better team during the 2-1 win and that his side were lucky to come away with three point.

“Having said that he has got his team competing well and they’re difficult to play against – Moysie might also feel he has a point to prove this weekend against his old employers.”

Villa will take some comfort in their performance earlier this week, but Dean Smith will know that his side need to be more clinical in front of goal.

Villa have performed well in almost every game this season, but, perhaps, haven’t picked up as many points as they have merited.

West Ham, meanwhile, will be feeling confident at the moment, as their recent run of good form has seen them fly up the table to fifth place.

If the Hammers can find a way to beat Manchester United tomorrow then they could even move as high as third, providing other results go their way.
