The 26-year-old was “absolutely sublime” for Tottenham on Wednesday, according to the BBC pundit

Steve Claridge has told BBC Sport that Danny Rose was “absolutely sublime” in Tottenham Hotspur’s win on Wednesday.

Tottenham smashed 10-man Southampton 4-1 at St Mary’s last night to move within a point of fourth-placed Arsenal in the race for Champions League qualification.

Dele Alli scored Spurs’ first and last goal of the night – a feat which will certainly earn him the post-match headlines but there were a number of stellar performances which should not be overlooked.

Victor Wanyama and Moussa Sissoko were also exceptional, but Claridge has opted to shine a light on the left-back’s display.

“It’s been a thoroughly professional performance from a number of different Tottenham players,” he told BBC Sport.

“Let’s be honest, when Harry Kane plays he takes them to another level. He makes all the difference and Danny Rose on the left hand side has been absolutely sublime.”

Virgil van Dijk had headed the Saints ahead after two minutes, but Alli levelled up to ensure parity at the break. Harry Kane nodded Tottenham ahead early in the second half, but the 23-year-old missed a penalty shortly after, following Nathan Redmond’s straight red card.

It was a fine win for the Lilywhites, who did struggle to kill the game off at times, scoring their last two goals in the final five minutes.
