The former Leeds striker believes that Roberts – who can operate as a striker, winger or attacking midfielder – needs to be shown confidence now, as he thrives on that.
Whelan said on BBC Radio Leeds: “Belief, confidence. He looks a little bit slow out there, but sometimes, lack of confidence and belief can slow you down.
“He is one of these players that thrives on confidence. He seems to need an arm around his shoulder right now.”
Tyler Roberts will get better
Roberts has got his chance in the Premier League this season, but the 21-year-old’s performances have been rather underwhelming.
The youngster started for Leeds against Sheffield United at the weekend, but the Wales international was taken off at half time.
So far this season, the 21-year-old has made one start and two substitute appearances in the Premier League for the Whites, according to WhoScored.
Roberts needs to step up his game if he is to become a regular in the Leeds starting lineup.
However, one must note that the Welshman is only 21 years of age, and he has had injury problems in the past.
Roberts is an important player in the Leeds squad, and he will get better in the coming weeks and months.
