Former Chelsea midfielder Andy Townsend said on The Monday Night Club show on BBC Radio 5 live on Monday evening (broadcast from 7pm, September 19, 2016) that Everton’s start to the 2016-17 Premier League season has not been as good as Liverpool’s.

Everton are second in the Premier League table at the moment with 13 points from five matches. Ronald Koeman’s side are just two points behind leaders Manchester City.

Meanwhile, Liverpool currently find themselves sixth in the standings with 10 points from five games.

Former Republic of Ireland international midfielder Townsend has explained why Everton’s start to the 2016-17 Premier League campaign has not been as impressive as Liverpool’s.

“No, not in terms of what I have seen,” said Townsend on The Monday Night Club show on BBC Radio 5 live on Monday evening (broadcast from 7pm, September 19, 2016) when asked if Everton have had a better start to the season than Liverpool.

“Liverpool have already been to Spurs, to Arsenal, to Chelsea, and picked up plenty of points, and could have had more,” added Townsend.

While many Everton fans will not agree with Townsend, the former Southampton and Aston Villa midfielder does have a point.

Liverpool have played some of the bigger and more competitive teams in the Premier League already this season.

Jurgen Klopp’s side have defeated Arsenal and Chelsea, and have drawn with Tottenham Hotspur.

The Reds have also got the better of defending English champions Leicester City 4-1 at Anfield.
