Leeds got the better of Swansea 1-0 away from home at the Liberty Stadium in the Championship on Sunday afternoon.
It was Spanish attacking midfielder Hernandez who scored the the only goal of the match, finding the net as late as the 89th minute.
The result saw Marcelo Bielsa’s side go three points clear of second-placed West Bromwich Albion at the top of the Championship table, with Brentford a further three points behind in third.
Following the full-time whistle, Hernandez, who can also operate as a winger and is a key player in the team, sank to his knees and pounded his hand into the turf.
Whelan said on BBC Radio Leeds when asked about Hernandez’s reaction at full time: “Passion. It’s reverse of the season this time last year, the crying and the upset and the pain that everyone felt.
“These are tears of ecstasy, relief and happiness that they are going through right now.”

Hernandez has made 25 starts and eight substitute appearances in the Championship for Leeds so far this season, scoring eight goals and providing seven assists in the process, according to WhoScored.
