Rangers salvaged a draw against Celtic.
Rangers’ Martin Waghorn misses a chance
Rangers earned a creditable draw against reigning champions Celtic yesterday, with Clint Hill rescuing a late point.
The Gers salvaged pride with the point, but could it have been even better?
Graeme Murty’s side landed five shots on target from eight attempts, and could easily have got on the scoresheet earlier, with Hill’s goal only coming in the 87 minute.
BBC Scotland pundit and former player Derek Johnstone criticised Rangers striker Martyn Waghorn, rating him as one of the team’s two weakest performers on the day.
He told BBC Sport: “He missed two big chances and there’s no excuse for the first. In his position you’re judged on goals and he should be taking those chances.”
Waghorn scored the previous week against Hamilton from the penalty spot, but was wasteful at Celtic Park.
Johnstone also criticised the underwhelming display of Barrie McKay, last season’s hero from the Scottish Cup semi final.
He said: “Rangers got the ball to him in the first half but he didn’t do anything with it. We expect more from him but he’ll come again.”
McKay, 22, is in his first season in the top flight and has scored only three league goals this season.
He still has a chance to add to his tally before the campaign ends, and is likely to remain a key player under new boss Pedro Caixinha.
