Garth Crooks has said that it is ‘very strange’ that Eric Dier has been Tottenham Hotspur’s best player for two weeks running on BBC Sport.
Dier was selected to start for Tottenham against Chelsea at the weekend, and he helped his side to a 0-0 draw.
The English defender was generally fairly solid throughout the contest, as Spurs kept another clean sheet.
And Crooks was very impressed by the way that Dier played during the contest.
“It’s the second consecutive week Eric Dier has made my TOTW,” the pundit said.
“It wasn’t easy for Dier, as he had Joe Rodon making his full debut beside him, and on a different day two mistakes by Rodon might have been exploited.
“What is most interesting is the point won at Stamford Bridge, as dull as it was, takes Spurs back to the top of the table.
“Something very strange is going on at Spurs when Dier is their star performer two weeks in a row, Spurs keep another clean sheet, and are top of the league again.”
Jose Mourinho actually suggested that Dier made lots of errors against Chelsea, so he may be slightly surprised to see his defender given such high praise.
However, it is true that Tottenham’s defence has tightened up significantly recently.
Spurs have now kept clean sheets against Manchester City and Chelsea in their last two matches and have conceded just one goal in their last five league games.
Spurs’s defensive solidity has been one of the keys to their success this season, with Mourinho’s men currently leading the way in the Premier League.
