Noel Whelan suggests that Pablo Hernandez should start for Leeds United against Sheffield Wednesday next weekend.
Noel Whelan has told BBC Sport that Leeds United attacking midfielder Pablo Hernandez looked lost against Ipswich Town on Saturday afternoon.
Hernandez, who can also operate as a winger, featured for Leeds against Ipswich away from home at Portman Road in the Championship.
The 31-year-old started the game and played for the entire 90 minutes, as the Whites played out a 1-1 draw with the Tractor Boys.
Former Leeds striker Whelan was following the match, and he was not too impressed with the performance of Hernandez.
Whelan, though, believes that the former Valencia and Swansea City attacker should start for Leeds against Sheffield Wednesday at Elland Road in the Championship next weekend.
“I think Hernandez looked a bit lost,” Whelan told BBC Sport. “They played the conditions better than us – we got Hernandez on the ball, but when you can’t take away any of the centre halves, you do have a problem. We didn’t trouble them enough.”
“I think the game will suit Hernandez next week – it was too scrappy and physical for him today,” added Whelan. “There will be a better surface for him next week and Leeds will be able to work the ball into him.
“But hindsight is a great thing. He didn’t do a great deal wrong, but he just didn’t have that influence.”
Hernandez has been one of the best players for Leeds so far this season. The attacking midfielder has scored four goals and created 64 chances in 22 Championship appearances for the Whites so far this season.
Leeds are fifth in the Championship table at the moment with 58 points from 33 matches and are very much in the running for the playoffs this season.
