Billy Dodds labelled Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney as ‘outstanding’ after his performance for Scotland during their 1-1 draw against Israel on Sunday, as he told BBC Sport.
The 23-year-old thriving Arsenal star played on the left side of a back three rather than in his usual left-back position yesterday.
Given that Scotland’s two best players – Andy Robertson and Tierney – so happen to occupy the same position, it doesn’t help their cause when picking them both.
But former Scotland forward, Dodds, thinks Tierney is doing pretty well in his new role despite previous doubts.
“We all mentioned about getting Tierney and Robertson in the same team,” said Dodds.
“It shows you that Tierney can play left centre-half. A lot of people say ‘Oh, I am not so sure about him’.
“But he has been outstanding tonight again.”
Steve Clarke opts to play a back three rather than a back four in order to get his two best players in the side.
But, of course, he could play one of Robertson and Tierney at left-back and the other on the left-wing in a back four.
Either way, Tierney is just adding to his qualities, and in the long run, not only does it benefit his country but Arsenal also.
