Former Tottenham Hotspur manager and current pundit David Pleat says Middlesbrough defender Ben Gibson was a mountain for his side as they picked up a 0-0 draw at Arsenal, the BBC report.

Boro went into the match with the Gunners having picked up just one point from their previous five matches, a run of form which has seen them slip alarmingly towards the bottom three.

But boss Aitor Karanka is renowned for setting his side up to play in a disciplined manner, and against Arsenal they without doubt put in their best performance of the season to date.

The Teessiders restricted the hosts to half chances and efforts from range, prompting BBC co-commentator David Pleat to single out Ben Gibson for praise following his outstanding display.

“Ben Gibson has been a mountain at the back for Middlesbrough. All of the Middlesbrough players have been workaholics,” Pleat told the BBC.

Boro were more than worthy of a point against Arsenal, and had it not been for both Petr Cech and the woodwork they could have even picked up a surprising victory.

Aitor Karanka’s side were threatening on the counterattack and extremely hardworking out of possession, starving the likes of Alexis Sanchez and Mesut Ozil of much-needed space in the final third.

Gibson has plenty of competition for places at the Riverside Stadium this season, but with performances of this ilk he will be hard to nudge out of Boro’s starting eleven.
