Garth Crooks has give his take on Tottenham Hotspur defender Serge Aurier on BBC Sport.
The former Tottenham forward, who now works as a pundit for BBC Sport, was not impressed by the performance of Aurier during Spurs’ defeat to Leicester City in the Premier League at the weekend.
In first-half injury time at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Sunday, the Ivory Coast international right-back committed a foul on Wesley Fofana inside the box.
It was not a challenge that the 27-year-old needed to have made, and Jamie Vardy made no mistake from the penalty spot.
Aurier has been playing well for Spurs this season, and his mistake against Leicester has raised concern for Crooks.
Crooks wrote on BBC Sport: “Just when you thought Serge Aurier had removed that erratic behaviour from his game, he panics and gives away a penalty. Barging into attackers on the edge of his own area is the game of fools.
“Aurier has been outstanding recently and to see the defender slip back into old habits is very concerning. Come to think of it, watching Spurs revert to everything I hate about a Jose Mourinho team was simply awful. If Spurs have to play like that then winning is essential.”
Moving on
Every footballer makes mistakes, and Aurier made one against Leicester. Perhaps the defender should be given the benefit of the doubt for now.
The right-back is a good player who makes mistakes from time to time, and maybe he should work more on that in the coming weeks and months.
Spurs lost against Liverpool and Leicester in their past two Premier League games, and the North London club will be determined to put together a run of positive results during the festive period.
