Tottenham Hotspur edged out the Saints last night, and the BBC pundit was impressed by one man in particular.
Steve Claridge has told BBC Sport that he was impressed by Victor Wanyama’s performance in Tottenham Hotspur’s 4-1 win away to Southampton on Wednesday night.
Tottenham moved back to within a point of fourth-placed Arsenal with a hard-fought, come-from-behind win over the Saints on the South Coast last night.
Virgil van Dijk headed the hosts into a lead after just two minutes, but goals from Dele Alli and Harry Kane in both halves helped Spurs to flip the match on its head.
Kane, who then missed a penalty on 58 minutes after Nathan Redmond was given a straight red card, had a decent game overall, but Claridge says it was Wanyama – who spent three years at Southampton – who caught his eye for Mauricio Pochettino’s side.
“I have been impressed with Victor Wanyama today,” he told BBC Sport. “It’s not often I would describe him as “twinklyfeet!”
The Lilywhites struggled for most of the second half to kill the game of, but a quickfire double from Son Heung-min and Alli in the final five minutes did just that.
Spurs have now won five of their last seven games and the manner of this victory certainly suggested that Pochettino and co have not given up on the title.
Of course, they are 10 points behind Premier League leaders Chelsea, but they still mustered the character, from a goal down, to avoid being 13 points behind and that spoke volumes for their resillience.
