Chris Sutton has suggested in The Daily Mail that Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin is a serious challenger to Tottenham Hotspur star Harry Kane in the England team.

The former Chelsea and Celtic striker – who now works as a pundit for BBC Sport and BT Sport – has been impressed with Calvert-Lewin, and believes that the 23-year-old will challenge Kane for a spot in the England starting lineup if he maintains his form.

Calvert-Lewin found the net for the Three Lions in their win against Wales on Thursday evening, and the striker has also scored six goals in the Premier League and three goals in the Carabao Cup for Everton so far this season, according to WhoScored.

Sutton told The Daily Mail: “If you had asked me a couple of months ago if he’d be in serious contention to play for England, pushing Harry Kane, I’d have said absolutely not.

“But he is scoring goals, playing well for Everton. Gareth now has a really good headache. This might even push Harry Kane on a bit.

“Kane has been a centre forward for England without a challenger. If Calvert-Lewin carries this on, then he is a serious challenger.”

Should Harry Kane be worried?

Kane is one of the best strikers on the planet and is a world-class player, and the 27-year-old remains a key figure for England.

True, Calvert-Lewin is banging in the goals for fun at the moment, but Kane has been doing that for years now, and England manager Gareth Southgate knows what he is capable of.

However, it is great for the Three Lions that the Everton youngster is playing well, as healthy competition in any squad is only good and brings the best out of all players.
