Pundit says German star is under appreciated by Arsenal fans, and would be a hero at Tottenham.
Ever since arriving at Arsenal in 2013, Mesut Ozil has divided opinion.
This is his fifth season in English football and it has been inconsistent once again, but he produced one of his best performances yet in the 2-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.
One pundit who took notice was Garth Crooks, who selected him in his BBC Sport Team of the Week.
But instead of simply lauding Ozil’s play, Crooks criticised Arsenal fans for their split opinions on the German, and insisted if he was a Tottenham player then he would be lauded as a real hero.
Crooks said: “I have said it before and I will say it again: Ozil should be playing for Tottenham, where he would be far more appreciated.
“Spurs fans would be giving him that ovation every week.
“Considering some of the complaints I have heard in recent years about Wenger and Ozil from Arsenal fans, I am not entirely sure they deserve either of them.”
Crooks is a former Tottenham player and that must be taken into account when reading his comments.
Ozil does get a tough time from the media and more lately from supporters, but this is partly due to his price tag, refusal to commit to a new deal, and because fans know he is capable of so much more, they want to see consistency.
The playmaker’s contract may be set to expire in the summer, but don’t count on him moving to Spurs and putting Crooks’ theory to the test.
