BBC Sport pundit Matthew Upson has praised Tottenham Hotspur head coach Mauricio Pochettino for making Reece James the captain against Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool at Stamford Bridge in London in the Premier League on Sunday.

Reece James started for Chelsea against Liverpool at home in the Premier League on Sunday.

The England international right-back was the captain.

It seems that Chelsea head coach Mauricio Pochettino has now made the £250,000-a-week (Spotrac) 23-year-old the new club captain.

And former Arsenal central defender and BBC Sport pundit Matthew Upson was pleased.

Upson said on BBC Sport: “Reece James being the new Chelsea captain makes sense to me. He is a true Chelsea boy, he’s been there a long, long time.

“He’s got the experience now, and he is getting to the age where the responsibility can be given more and more within the group. It totally makes sense.”

Reece James is one of the best young right-backs in the Premier League and is a big player for Chelsea.

The England international has had injury problems in recent times, but when fit, he is one of the best right-backs around.

James has been on the books of Chelsea his entire professional club football career so far.

Chelsea are a massive club and a global brand, and they regularly win major trophies.

The Blues have won the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League in recent seasons.

And under Mauricio Pochettino, Chelsea will be looking to get back to those glory days.

James has made 99 appearances in the Premier League so far in his career.

The 23-year-old right-back has scored seven goals, provided 14 assists, and kept 20 clean sheets in those games.
