Noel Whelan has berated the inconsistency of Leeds United winger Helder Costa.
Whites boss Marcelo Bielsa is known for making excellent substitutions and that judgement was sound again last night.
Leeds cruised to a 3-0 win over Southampton to move 10th in the Premier League table and all three goals came in the second half.
Bielsa took Jack Harrison off for Costa at half-time and the directness of the Portuguese attacker seemed to be exactly what United were missing.
He set up Stuart Dallas for Leeds’ second goal of the night, but that was only the former Wolves winger’s third assist in 16 Premier League outings this season.
And Elland Road legend Whelan claims that Costa – who’s scored two top-flight goals this season – is simply ‘infuriating’ because of how regularly he blows hot and cold.
He said to BBC West Yorkshire Sport: “He is probably one of these infuriating players because you know how much quality he’s got, you know what he can do, but it’s so hit and miss with him.
“Unfortunately there’s just too many inconsistent performances from him. We know he can rip people to shreds on the right hand side he’s got that much quality, but it’s just finding that consistency.”
Inconsistency is nothing new from Costa, if we’re honest.
That was the case with him even in the Championship last term. He’s definitely a quality player on his day, but the difference the decent players and the top-class ones boils down to consistency.
