BBC pundit Izzy Christiansen feels Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson Becker ‘got away with one’ at Manchester City after Phil Foden missed an early chance to score on Saturday.

The Reds took a trip to Etihad Stadium for the lunchtime kick-off as the teams resumed their Premier League seasons. Liverpool arrived at Manchester City knowing that a win would put them atop the table, as well. Just a point split the clubs after the first 12 fixtures of the term.

Yet Alisson gifted Manchester City an early chance to put Liverpool on the back foot in their top-of-the-table tussle. But Foden fluffed his lines and could not punish the Brazilian’s error. Pressure on the England playmaker from Reds captain Virgil van Dijk also helped Allison out.

Foden let Liverpool off the hook after Alisson gifted Man City a chance

Alisson nearly delighted Manchester City in the 12th minute on Saturday when the Liverpool goalkeeper played a loose ball straight to Foden. The 23-year-old leapt on Alisson’s mistake on the edge of the area. But he would only direct his shot straight at the £67m shot-stopper.

Pressure from Van Dijk ensured Foden would not have an easy shot. But former Everton and England midfielder Christiansen believes Foden should have done better and only let Alisson off the hook. It would have been Foden’s fourth goal in the Premier League so far this term.

“Alisson got away with that one,” she said on BBC Radio 5 Live. “He did a beautiful turn and just tried to fizz the ball out to Tsimikas. Foden should have done better with his quality.”

Alisson is firmly established among the Premier League’s best goalkeepers and is a vital part of Liverpool’s line-up. His shot-stopping credentials and ability to set Liverpool on the break are also among his best traits. But Foden nearly scored from what was a rare error from him.

Manchester City also welcomed Liverpool to Etihad Stadium this weekend knowing Alisson would be amongst their biggest obstacles. He had kept four clean sheets through 12 games in the Premier League this season. Liverpool’s 10 goals conceded were also the division-low.
