Garth Crooks has posed a question on BBC Sport regarding Liverpool central defender Virgil van Dijk and Real Madrid.

The former Tottenham Hotspur forward has included Van Dijk in his Premier League Team of the Season.

The former Celtic star played an important role in the Reds winning the league title this season for the first time in 30 years.

However, Crooks has questioned whether Liverpool will be able to match the Netherlands international’s ambition if Spanish and European giants Real Madrid and Barcelona come calling.

Crooks wrote on BBC Sport: “Van Dijk has come a long way since his days at Southampton but fulfilled all the enormous promise he showed when he was at St Mary’s.

“The question is, what now? Sergio Ramos is coming to the end of his career at Real Madrid and so is Gerard Pique at Barcelona. I wonder if Liverpool will be enough to satisfy Van Dijk’s ambitions?”

Liverpool stay

Madrid are arguably the biggest club in the world and have just won La Liga under head coach Zinedine Zidane.

Los Blancos could delve into the transfer market to make their squad better for next season, and perhaps Van Dijk will be on their radar.

However, it is hard to see the 29-year-old leave the Merseyside outfit this summer.

Van Dijk is settled at Liverpool and is adored by the fans, and as far as ambition is concerned, the Reds won the Champions League in 2018-19 and the Premier League in 2019-20.

Klopp’s side will be confident of winning the league title next season as well.
