Chris Sutton has questioned the price that Everton have paid for Ben Godfrey on BBC Sport.
Everton signed Godfrey from Norwich City for around £25 million at the back end of the transfer window, with the centre-back expected to provide competition for places at Goodison Park.
Godfrey showed real promise at Premier League level last season, but his flaws were also exposed on occasion.
And while Sutton believes that Godfrey could develop into an excellent addition, he did suggest that Everton may have overpaid for the 22-year-old.
“Everton have just signed Ben Godfrey for £20-25m who at Norwich City was developing nicely, has really good attributes but at times last season, switched off,” Sutton said.
“I think he’ll go on to be a really good player but £25m on a developing player!”
Godfrey does have a point to prove at Everton, after moving for such a fee.
The youngster looked assured in possession at Norwich last term, but he struggled defensively at times.

That being said, it is clear why Everton bought him, as Godfrey has such an enviable skill-set for a modern day defender.
The 22-year-old is blessed with pace, he is strong in the air, and he never looked flustered on the ball.
At Everton he will be in competition with the likes of Michael Keane, Mason Holgate and Yerry Mina for a starting place.
