Arjen Robben sounds genuinely disappointed Robin van Persie isn’t available for the upcoming Champions League duel.
Manchester United take on Bayern Munich at Old Trafford, knowing they have to secure a win without top goalscorer Robin van Persie.
The Dutchman hit a hat-trick in the last round against Olympiakos but went off injured late on and has not featured since.
The injury will keep him out of Tuesday night’s clash at Old Trafford against Bayern Munich, in what is a major boost for the German champions.
There is one Bayern player disappointed not to see the striker in action though, and that’s compatriot Arjen Robben.
The winger told Bayern Munich’s official website: “I find it a pity that he is not there. The same is now true for Thiago.
“In the final phase of the season every player wants to be there. And if not, that’s painful. I know this from personal experience.”
From a neutral perspective it’s a shame the duo won’t be featuring, with Van Persie and Thiago capable of being matchwinners for either side.
Robben is not taking Van Persie’s omission as a boost for Bayern, praising United’s alternatives:
“Of course Van Persie has a special quality. But Manchester still has enough forward options: Rooney, Welbeck, Nani, Valencia … As I said: It will be a tough duel.”
Van Persie’s goals against Olympiakos underlined his quality – but if the Red Devils players touted by Robben play to their full potential, then United have a chance.
Anything less and the void filled by the Dutchman will only be emphasised.
