Bayern Munich’s official Twitter account has paid tribute to Manuel Neuer’s early save from Danny Welbeck as a key point from yesterday’s game.
Manchester United drew 1-1 with Bayern Munich yesterday – and despite the fact the German side dominated possession and nearly every other statistic known to man – United probably had the best chances of the match.
One player had two glaring opportunities – one he took and one he didn’t.
Danny Welbeck was adjudged to have used a high foot on Javi Martinez when thrashing home an early strike but a legitimate chance was the one he wasted.
United broke away quickly from defence to attack – and a searching ball from Wayne Rooney saw Welbeck charge clear of the pursuing Jerome Boateng.
One-on-one with Manuel Neuer all he had to do was curl the ball beyond the oncoming goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
United fans know all too well about the brilliance of this keeper. Sir Alex Ferguson quite openly spoke of his admiration for the stopper after a Champions League tie against his former team Schalke 04.
And he stood strong as Welbeck’s cheeky but ill-advised chip was batted away by Neuer – looking like a basketball center with his denial.
Welbeck was distraught while Bayern and Neuer were elated – and today the Bayern Munich official Twitter account has sent its thanks to their star goalkeeper for his stop – including a picture with their message.
Welbeck may not get a better chance to beat arguably the best goalkeeper in the world.
