Liverpool coach Barry Lewtas has told the Liverpool Echo that he was impressed with Rhian Brewster’s work rate in the recent Under-19’s clash with Red Bull Salzburg.

Liverpool edged past Salzburg with a 4-3 win on Wednesday night, but the two sides met in a UEFA Youth League game earlier in the day too.

The Reds ran out 4-2 winners in that one, with Yasser Larouci, Neco Williams, Curtis Jones and striker Brewster getting themselves on the scoresheet.

It’s therefore been a positive week for Liverpool against the Austrians, both at senior and youth level, which will no doubt please boss Jurgen Klopp.

Despite mostly being around the first team setup, striker Brewster went back down to play for the Under-19’s on Wednesday, and grabbed himself a goal.

The 19-year-old will be hoping for first-team action this season, but fans criticised his performance in the recent Carabao Cup tie with MK Dons, suggesting he’s overrated having struggled against the League One side.

Now, Under-19 coach Lewtas has praised Brewster for his had work even though he was dropping from first team to Under-19’s, believing he has shown he has the mentality to work hard for himself and the team, which is an encouraging sign.

“What’s great is he was trying really hard, and how good is that? He’s a player who isn’t with us very often,” said Lewtas. “He’s based at Melwood but still has the mentality to really want to do well for the team, to work hard, to run. That’s a real compliment to him,” he added.
