Peterborough United director of football Barry Fry has told The Scottish Sun that he thinks Ivan Toney could be worth £40million to £50million if Celtic sign him.

Celtic are in the market for a new striker this summer, and it seems that Toney is one of their top targets.

The Glasgow Evening Times reported earlier this week that Celtic have offered £4million rising to £6million for Toney.

Brentford have offered £6million for the striker, but Toney allegedly prefers a move to Parkhead given that he can reunite with his former Posh coach Gavin Strachan.

Strachan has recently joined Neil Lennon’s staff as first team coach, and he could be key to bringing Toney to Glasgow.

The 24-year-old striker smashed 26 goals last season, and now has 49 goals in 94 games for Peterborough having dominated in League One.

Now, Fry has suggested that Strachan has indeed told Celtic to go for Toney, but the Bhoys are nowhere near signing him as they need to come up with more money.

Fry added that Toney would be a ‘revelation’ at Celtic, backing him for 30 to 40 goals if he joined them before leaving for up to £50million – though he may have added a couple of inches to Toney’s height just to big him up even more.

“They mentioned they may be selling one or two. I think they’re trying it on to try to get Toney cheap,” said Fry. “I’ve had experience with Celtic, so I know the score. I know the manager wants a tenth title and he’s identified our bloke as the best. Gavin Strachan’s gone there and he’s backed up the opinion of Toney. They’ve told Peter Lawwell and Nicky Hammond to go and get him, but they won’t get Toney with what they’re piddling about with, that’s for sure.”

“Toney would be a revelation for Celtic, he’d be a star, for definite. He’d score 30 to 40 goals up there, he really would. Not only is he brilliant in the box, scoring and creating with his right foot, left foot and head, at six foot four he’s also our best defender. Celtic will get £40-50m for him,” he added.
