Peterborough United chief executive Barry Fry has told the Peterborough Evening Telegraph that he believed he had done a deal to sign West Ham United midfielder Josh Cullen.

Cullen has been on loan at Bolton Wanderers, but has found first-team appearances hard to come by.

Posh felt that they could give him regular action, but Bolton have begun to pick Cullen again now.

Cullen has started in Bolton’s last two matches, having previously not featured for 12 games, and the youngster will not stay at the Macron Stadium, much to Fry’s frustration.

“I thought I had the Cullen deal sewn up,” he admitted. “West Ham’s owners had been very helpful, but Bolton have suddenly started picking him and he is now going to stay there.

“It’s very frustrating as he was a top player for Bradford last season. He was our number one target for midfield, but we will have to look elsewhere now.”

Fry has a great relationship with West Ham’s owner, with Posh already benefitting from it.

Peterborough took Martin Samuelsen on loan last season, and they were also offered Reece Oxford, although they turned down that opportunity.

Cullen has played 12 matches for Bolton now, and West Ham will be hoping that the prospect remains in Phil Parkinson’s first-team plans for the rest of the campaign.
