Leeds United were interested in signing Marcus Maddison from Peterborough United last January.
Peterborough United director of football Barry Fry has confirmed to the Peterborough Evening Telegraph that Leeds United had a bid of £2.5 million accepted for Marcus Maddison last January.
Steve Evans identified Maddison as a potential addition for Leeds, and was initially backed with the funds required to sign the winger.
However, Leeds pulled out of the deal at the last minute, and Maddison has remained with Posh ever since.
The former Gateshead man is still a crucial player for Grant McCann’s side, and he currently leads the League One side’s assist charts this season.
Maddison has created 10 goals in 21 appearances this term, and he has also six goals to his name.
It has not been confirmed whether Leeds are still in interested in Maddison, but Fry did suggest that Aston Villa were watching the attacking midfielder.
“We have had no bids for Marcus Maddison since we accepted a £2.5 million offer from Leeds when Steve Evans was the manager last season,” Fry said. “The owners at Leeds wouldn’t see the deal through though.
“Aston Villa have watched Marcus, but they have not bid for him.”
Leeds and Villa are both thought to be open to doing business this January.
The Championship pair are both chasing promotion this season, as they seek to return to the Premier League.
