Leeds United came close to signing Marcus Maddison from Peterborough United back in 2016.

Peterborough United director of football Barry Fry has told BBC Sport that Marcus Maddison was very disappointed to miss out of a move to Leeds United last year.

Leeds and Peterborough agreed a fee for the winger back in January 2016, while Steve Evans was in charge at Elland Road.

However, Fry claims that Leeds moved the goalposts in the deal at the last moment, causing the transfer to collapse.

And Fry has admitted that Maddison was not happy about missing out on a switch to the Whites.

“I had three meetings with Leeds and thought I’d agreed a fee, then [Leeds owner Massimo] Cellino changed the goalposts and it didn’t happen,” Fry said.

“Marcus was disappointed it didn’t happen, obviously, because Leeds are a huge club.

“He’s in his last year and we’ll see what comes in, but we won’t be selling him for the sake of selling him.”

Leeds may have a chance of signing Maddison this summer, if they were to submit a repeat bid.

The former Newcastle United winger is heading into his last year of his contract at Posh.

Peterborough are understood to be keen to offer Maddison a new deal, but Fry has already suggested that they cannot afford to give the 23-year-old improved terms.

Maddison has made 41 League One appearances for Posh this season, scoring nine goals and claiming 17 assists.
