With Barry Ferguson touted as a candidate to land the Rangers job and return to Ibrox, now is a good a time as any to revisit comments he made about Celtic last summer.

Shortly after Celtic landed striker Moussa Dembele from Fulham, Ferguson dismissed the capture as one he felt Rangers should not be concerned with.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Ferguson explained that his former side Rangers were making more important additions of their own, which would help them try and wrestle the title from their rivals.

“Let’s be honest, what some people are doing is looking at the age of some of the Rangers recruits and questioning them.

“But Warburton has got a good mixture and I’m convinced Rangers can be serious challengers for the Scottish Premiership title.”

Ferguson went on to talk up Joey Barton and Clint Hill as key signings for the Gers, adding of Dembele: “It’s a different ball game in Scotland and someone like Dembele won’t have experienced anything like it.”

Fast forward to the present day, and Rangers sit in third place, 33 points behind Celtic.

Dembele is scoring for fun, netting 15 league goals already, and is approaching 30 in all competitions, with a hat-trick against Rangers the highlight.

If Ferguson was to go on and land the Rangers job, fans will have to hope his judgement is shrewder than the comments he made last summer.
