Rangers have released midfielder Carlos Pena, bringing the Mexican’s unsuccessful time at the club to an end.
The Gers issued a statement on their official website yesterday announcing Pena’s release.
It is timely that tonight Rangers travel to Aberdeen, the scene of Pena’s finest performance for the club.
It was in November 2017 that Pena played a key role in Rangers’ 3-0 win at Pittodrie, with the Mexican on target.
Pena’s spell at Rangers unravelled soon after and he was sent on a series of unsuccessful loans in his homeland.
Comments from former Rangers captain Barry Ferguson about Pena’s performance that day are a poignant reminder of the day he flattered to deceive.
His words apply to all players hoping to be successful at Ibrox.
Ferguson told The Daily Record: “I swear to God, when I saw Carlos Pena chase 50 yards back into his own half I almost jumped up and tackled the sofa,”
“Now I don’t know if Pena is a proper player or not but I do know if he puts in that kind of effort every time he steps onto a pitch then he’ll be appreciated by the Rangers support. That’s all they’ll ever demand of their players and I know that from personal experience because I had more than my share of bad games for the club.
“But never once did I step across that white line prepared to accept defeat. And that’s the mental approach which separates a real Rangers player from all the rest.”
Rangers defender Joe Worrall is one current Gers player to recently have a shocker, against Kilmarnock, before bouncing back to put it right.
Worrall has fought for the team since then and as Ferguson suggests, that’s what the fans want to see.
Gerrard’s team will need to be up for a battle tonight.
