Steven Davis has been a bit hit and miss since returning to Ibrox side Glasgow Rangers.

Steven Davis of Rangers celebrates after scoring during the Clydesdale Bank Premier League match between Rangers and Hearts at Ibrox Stadium on May 7, 2011 in Glasgow, Scotland.

Barry Ferguson has told The Record that Steven Gerrard should drop Rangers midfielder Steven Davis for this afternoon’s visit to Celtic.

Both Old Firm rivals renew hostilities as Rangers chase a first victory at Parkhead since 2010.

Gerrard’s side won the last encounter 1-0 at Ibrox back in December – a game that could and should have been won by a far higher margin.

Form isn’t on the Gers’ side this time in what will be Neil Lennon’s first Glasgow derby since returning to Celtic on an interim basis last month.

The light Blues brought one of their own legends back to the club a little earlier this year but it hasn’t been a brilliant return for Davis.

The 34-year-old, on loan from Southampton, has struggled for regular football under Gerrard since coming back.

He started the 1-1 draw with Kilmarnock prior to featuring for Northern Ireland during the international break, and although Ferguson admits that he ‘loves’ his former team-mate, the Rangers legend doesn’t want to see him in the first XI today.

He told The Record: “Some may be surprised that I’ve not gone with Steven Davis but much as I love him as a player and the fact he’s played this week with Northern Ireland, he may be better served coming off the bench.”
