Steven Gerrard’s Glasgow Rangers have signed Jon Flanagan, while Ibrox star James Tavernier has been linked with moves away.

Rangers have signed Jon Flanagan on a free transfer following the defender’s departure from Liverpool, but Ibrox great Barry Ferguson has written in The Daily Record that he wants James Tavernier to stay at the Scottish Premiership club despite reported interest from Everton among other clubs.

Everton, Burnley and Swansea City are interested in signing Tavernier from Rangers in the summer transfer window, according to The Mirror (click here to read more).

Former Rangers midfielder Ferguson has stated that he wants the 26-year-old right-back to stay at Ibrox and fight for his place.

The 40-year-old former Scotland international has also given his take on Rangers signing 25-year-old full-back Flanagan on a free transfer following his release by Liverpool at the end of last season.

Ferguson wrote in The Daily Record about Flanagan: “I admired him at Liverpool, where he played at the highest level and was never afraid to bomb up and down the wing and into a tackle.

“He can play right and left in defence and adds to the competition Rangers will need in their squad if they are even to get close to Celtic next season. I’m not sure his arrival necessarily raises questions over the future of captain James Tavernier who excelled last term in a campaign that was otherwise best forgotten.

“Money talks, of course, and if Rangers were to receive an offer for the full-back that was too good to refuse I’m sure they would sanction the deal and reinvest in the squad.

“I know of a few clubs who looked at Tavernier last season because he did stand out. But I’d like to see him stay and create greater competition for places – and he can also play further forward on the right.”

Quality footballer

Tavernier is one of the best right-backs in the Scottish Premiership, and the performances of the 26-year-old last season were superb.

Rangers should do their best to keep hold of the former Newcastle right-back if they want to challenge Old Firm rivals Celtic for the Scottish Premiership title next season.
