The former Rangers captain is feeling hopeful about the club’s chances in 2019/20.

The Gers kicked off their bid for the Scottish crown with a late 2-1 win against Kilmarnock on Sunday.
Although not the best performance, it was a hard fought win that required heart and effort to see through. It’s exactly the kind of three points crucial to their league campaign that they failed to pick up last term.
Ahead of the weekend’s fixtures, Ferguson wrote that his former club can challenge for silverware.
As quoted by The Daily Record, he said: “They will run Celtic close because there’s a good feeling around the place and there’s a different mindset. The most important thing is that silverware ends up back at Ibrox at the end of the season, whether that be the league, League Cup or Scottish Cup.
“But if you’re a player in that dressing room then of course you will be motivated by the prospect of stopping Celtic winning nine-in-a-row and it will be in their minds.”
There’s no doubt that Celtic made the more impressive statement of intent this weekend with a 7-0 thrashing of St Johnstone. If they’re feeling any pressure right now you wouldn’t know it.

Nine-in-a-row is a mammoth prize in the context of Scottish football though and as the weeks and months go on and that inevitable pressure builds, Rangers know they’ll have to capitalise on any slip-ups to have any chance of making things uncomfortable for the reigning champions.
Whether they have that kind of mindset, as Ferguson claims, remains to be seen.
The early signs coming out of both camps look positive for their supporters. Now it’s about who can show consistency across a busy autumn and winter of football in domestic, and potentially continental, competition.
We may know a lot more about where both teams are after the first derby of the season on September 1st.
